On Dec. 17, Irvington’s Cycling Club and Girl Up Club teamed up to host a charity event that took place at the Alameda Creek Trail, and had various routes of differing difficulty for those who wanted to take a relaxed ride or a more rigorous one. The fundraiser was for Girl Up’s initiative with School Cycle, which helps provide girls in Guatemala with bikes so that they can safely get to school and receive an education. Girl Up is a campaign under the United Nations Foundation that raises funds and awareness for underprivileged girls in developing countries with regard to their health, education, and security.

“Our club hosts different events like holiday ornament making and speaker sessions later this year to bring attention to the latest causes the organization has taken up, such as education in India and going safely to school in Guatemala,” co-vice president of Girl Up junior Rachana Jayaraman said.

Overall, about 400 dollars was raised from the event for the Girl Up initiative. The event ran very smoothly and the two clubs did not encounter any major problems.

“I enjoyed the idea of people coming together and supporting us and our cause of helping girls in Guatemala get bikes,” vice president of Cycling Club junior Kunal Advani said. “I hope that next time more people can come to our event and support us.”
