The Irvington Vikings defeated the John F. Kennedy Titans at an away game on Tuesday, Oct. 6. The girl’s varsity tennis team won 6-1.
Though the match had a slow start, Irvington managed to overtake Kennedy, winning their first few games. In the second game, Amanda Tran managed to overpower her opponent with her powerful strokes. “She’s playing very, very well, as a lefty,” Coach Dan Gullion said. “She’s got confidence in her game, and the things she’s doing right now are the things we’ve done in practice. She’s seeing the game, attacking her opponent’s weaknesses.”
“We were winning on both sides, for doubles and singles,” Coach Dan Leon said. “We’re working on just being consistent, on keeping the ball in play.”
Tennis Captain Stuti Patel said that the team played well this match. “Last match, we lost 0-7 to Mission San Jose, and we did much better in this game,” she said. “Yesterday, we did drills, and that really helped our swings. We still need to work on our short-court points and team support. If we can take it one point at a time, and not let previous points affect us, we’ll play well.”
“Each of the games went really well,” Coach Gullion said. “We took care of them quite easily. We still have to work on basic groundstrokes: the drop shot, the overhead, the slice. Still, we need to remember to play the game and have fun. That’s one of the most important things.”
