The Irvington High School Girls’ Golf team earned a decisive road victory against Washington High in the San Ramon Golf Club this week, ending in a victory of 301-279. The Vikings handled the cloudy and breezy conditions with confidence showing steady progress on every hole.
Coach Harrington, who’s led the team for four years, praised the group’s focus and teamwork throughout the match. “Our goal is always to improve, and just get better every time we play,” he mentioned. His approach paid off as the players kept their composure and encouraged each other through each round.
Elsa Hsieh (11), who is a nationally ranked player, led the team with a great performance. Her round was highlighted by an impressive birdie on hole eight, made after the green she reached in two shots with her five wood. “My driver was working really well today,” she said after the match. “Its important to stay positive and focus on each shot.” Balancing schoolwork with elite athletic preparation is no small feat, but Hsieh credits her time management to meticulous planning. “I literally go down to the minute,” she explained, laughing. She explained that golf has taught her time management and resilience. “Pressure makes diamonds,” she said. “You can’t dwell on a bad shot. Stay neutral and stay positive.”
Olivia Lee (10) attributed the win to the team’s supportive atmosphere and each individual player’s hard work. “Even when we have a tough shot, we lift each other up,” she said. “It’s really about staying calm and enjoying the game.” Lee, who has set personal goals toward qualifying for NCS this season, shared that golf has sharpened her focus and patience. “It’s taught me to enjoy the process of learning,” she added. “That’s the best way to approach it.”
Coach Harrington, a former Irvington baseball coach turned golf leader, was proud of his players’ maturity and discipline. “They’re great kids, super focused and fun to be around,” he said with a smile. With this victory, the Vikings improved their league standing and continued building momentum for their next few games. As the season continues, the Vikings’ blend of determination, teamwork, and positivity sets them apart, not just as competitors, but as a team truly driven to excel.
