Bands and guard bring NINE trophies home
On Saturday, November 19, about three hundredIrvingtonstudents rode a bus to Lincoln High School to compete in their last band review of the year and came back with big smiles and big trophies. For the first time ever,IrvingtonHigh Schoolwon Sweepstakes at a band review.
For those of you who don’t know what Sweepstakes is, it is the award given to the school with the highest score out of all the bands that came out to compete, not just within the division. There are four categories: Auxillary (or Colorguard), Music, Showmanship, and Overall. Thanks to the hard work of each band and guard member, especially the leaders, Irvington won three of these four awards, Music, Showmanship, and Overall.
In addition to Sweepstakes, Irvington took six other awards home, three from the parade category and three from the concert competition. Percussion, led by senior Randy Chow, took third with a score of 83.0. The drum major, Aaron Brown, was awarded second place and scored 90.0. The colorguard, headed by Lina Kudinar and Sirena Bainter, took first place with a score of 79.0.
As for the concert competition, all three Irvington bands were in division B, competing themselves. Freshman Symphonic Band took third place with 83.5; Symphonic Band was awarded second and scored 86.5, while Wind Ensemble took first with 93.1.
For many, seniors in particular, they were very excited they got to end their high school band/guard career with a bang. “This is the best band review I’ve had in all my four years withIrvington,” said senior Guard captain Lina Kudinar. “I’m sad to be graduating but I’m happy that my last march was my best.”
“Four years might not seem like a very long time, but in these four years our marching band has really changed. We’ve changed from being an award winning marching band to one of the best marching bands in northern California,” said senior Kevin Yu.
Drum major senior Aaron Brown said, “Today was the first time Irvington’s ever gotten sweepstakes. But it won’t be the last.”
