    Irvington Smash-down

First Varsity tournament of the season and the Vikings snag a trophy

Irvington held the Varsity tournament on Saturday, March 27th. The tournament was held by Coach Steve Strout with the help of Assistant Coaches Anne Chung, Kendrick Chow and Jerry Tsai. Participating schools included American, Andrew Hill, Castro Valley, Dougherty Valley, James Logan, Moreau Catholic, Mission San Jose, Newark Memorial, Staag, San Leandro, Washington, Windsor, Woodside, Lynbrook, and our very own Vikings. The tournament lasted approximately thirteen hours, starting at eight a.m. in the morning and ending around nine at night.

Mission dominated and took most of the trophies for all events—Mixed Doubles, Girls’ Doubles, Boys’ Singles, Girls’ Singles, and Boys’ Doubles but the Vikings played hard and tried their best. Seniors Nancy Liu and Shirley Fok managed to win finals for the consolation games in Girls’ Doubles. They had lost their first game but managed to pick up the pace and place 1st in cons, taking home a trophy.

In Mixed Doubles, Seniors Nancy Liu and Kent Wang almost made it to cons, or consolation semi-finals. Many Vikings made close calls to either the semi-finals or cons semi-finals. Senior Quess Liu was only one game away from the semi-finals for Boys’ Singles. It was same for Junior Sally Tseng playing in Girls’ Singles and Seniors Quess Liu and Jacky Lui in Boys’ Doubles as well.

The Vikings will face Logan on Tuesday and Dougherty Valley on Thursday. The next and final Varsity tournament of the season will be held at Newark Memorial High School on April 3rd.
