On Tuesday, October 1st, 2013, Irvington’s girls’ tennis team defeated the Washington Huskies. The varsity division won 5 games and lost 2 games, while the junior varsity division won 6-1. Irvington’s varsity singles players Anjali Kumar, Ratheya Rajakumar, Jacquelyn Hoang, and Sharman Tan performed exceptionally well; all four of the competitors won their respective matches, with sophomore Anjali Kumar defeating Washington’s #1 singles player (the highest-ranked player on the team) 6-0 in both sets. Varsity doubles #3 players Aashna Mehta and Anum Haidari (both juniors) won a relatively close match against their opponents, scoring 6-3 in their first set and 7-5 in a tiebreaker for their second set.
When asked for his aspirations and expectations for the players this season, assistant coach Ric Lagman asserted that he places more emphasis on how enjoyable the experience is than on the scores of the players. “Try your best and just have fun,” he explained his philosophy. “Win or lose, just have fun.”
Since Irvington beat out Washington for the third place spot at MVALs last year, the Washington coach expected difficult competition in this match and remarked, “This one’s a tough game,” during the competition. This was Irvington’s third match of the season. Before this match, the girls had won a game against American High School and lost a match against James Logan High School.
