On November 7, the Irvington girls’ varsity volleyball team played in its final home game of the season against American. The Lady Vikings finished on a high note sweeping the Lady Eagles 25-18, 25-21, and 25-14.
Seniors Madi Fremont had four kills to go along with one block, Mikayla Deibert recorded 20 digs, and Gita Venkatakrishnan posted a double-double with 35 assists and 15 digs.
In addition, juniors Gabriela Charbeneau finished with 13 kills, Sofia Aguirre had 12 kills alongside one block, and Savannah Fox contributed with five kills and two blocks.
The first set of the match got off to a slow start for the Lady Vikings as they trailed early 6 to 10. Then, the Lady Vikings started to play more aggressively instead of tense and scared as they took the first set finishing on a 19-8 run with juniors Gabriela Charbeneau, Sofia Aguirre, and Savannah Fox combining for 12 kills.
The second set had the same rough start as the Lady Vikings again trailed early. Again, they were able to string together points to come back again in the second set with junior Sofia Aguirre leading the way in kills with six for the second set.
The third set became a game of runs when the Lady Vikings took a commanding 18-8 lead. Then, the Lady Eagles came roaring back going on a 6-0 run to cut the Lady Vikings lead to 18-14. The Lady Vikings though turned on the afterburners ending the game on a 7-0 run to end the match.
On this emotional night, the seniors shared their final thoughts on their final home game.
Madi Fremont said, “I was really nervous at first and then as we started playing, I knew that we could all come together and the play the best game that we could and it was really amazing.”
Mikayla Deibert said, “I was so nervous and then when we started to play the game, we were all so happy and it felt really amazing and I just love our team.”
Gita Venkatakrishnan said, “I was really looking forward to senior night ever since freshman year and it was everything that I hoped for and my other senior captains were great and we did a great job of sticking together.”
On the season, the Lady Vikings went 13-16 overall, going 4-10 in MVAL play.
