The Irvington Girls Tennis team earned a title of third in the district this fall with a record of 10-4. Equaling their record and district ranking from last year, the team capped off a successful season and proved their dominance over most teams from the league.
Driven by Coach Dan Leon and Assistant Coach Lyle Walker, who have been coaching for several years now, the girls tennis team performed well this season with an impressive win-loss record. Losses came from Mission, American, and Moreau. Seniors Sakshi Das, Cassie James, and Stuti Patel led the team as captains.
“We beat the Logan girls tennis team this year in both our home and away games,” Captain Stuti Patel said. “That was good because Logan is one of our biggest rivals, but we lost both our games to American, so that will be a new rivalry for next year.”
At the postseason tournament MVALs, 11 players from Irvington’s team played on the first day. Only four players, juniors Jessica Singh and Anjali Thakur, and sophomores Arielle Wilson and Kelly Yoo, advanced to the second day of play at MVALs. However, they were not able to reach the third round.
Many players who did not advance in MVALs were still recognized as some of the top players in the district including juniors Amanda Tran and Katherine Grant, as well as sophomores Arielle Wilson and Kelly Yoo. Although there is much talent on the team, approximately a fifth of the team is graduating next year, so the remaining players will have to continue to work hard to keep their position as the third best team in the district.
