Note: The following transcript was taken from an interview with Vincent Wang, Vice President of IHS Quiz Bowl.

When I first joined quiz bowl as a freshman, I had just assumed I would get the occasional physics or math question. However, over time, I’ve started learning about other topics that I’ve found to be interesting, such as contemporary art and anthropology. Overall, I think quiz bowl has made me into a much more well-rounded person academically. In fact, I’ve been exposed to cool and interesting material, such as new books and art since I joined the club. I play piano outside of school and actually discovered some of my favorite pieces from quiz bowl questions. 

About every month, we write and read out a themed question set that is more humorous and creative than typical quiz bowl sets. We’ve put out sets on fine art, Christmas, and current events this year. We are planning to hold an individual tournament in April geared towards newer players, who we always welcome. 

Our club has practices every Tuesday lunch in Mrs. MJ’s room and every Thursday night on our Discord. We also participate in a lot of tournaments, including state-level and history bowl ones. Members get to bond with others while learning interesting facts, which is pretty cool. 

There are so many benefits to joining our club. Not only does it improve memory and recall to retain knowledge from classes, but it also cross-trains with other academic competitions like Physics Olympiad, Science Olympiad. Participating in this game is also cheaper compared to other activities, making it really accessible for all players. Coming out of just a single session, you learn so much from the fine arts to the sciences. If you are interested, definitely check out our tournament in mid-April!
