Warning: spoilers for Season 1 of “Loki” ahead

After waiting for 2 long years, the first episode of the highly anticipated season 2 of Marvel’s “Loki” released October 5, 2023. Continuing Marvel’s TV series releases, a new episode of Loki will be released every Thursday at 6pm PST.
Following season 1, director Kate Herron decided to step away from the project being replaced by the duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead who also directed Marvel’s “Moonknight”. For a quick recap of season 1, Loki (played by Tom Hiddleston from 2012) was on a mission to destroy New York City where he gets captured, gets his hands on the tesseract and then vanishes. Though he helps Mobius hunt down his variant Sylvie (played by Sophia Di Martino), he strikes a deal with her to kill the Time Keepers. Escaping to the TVA only to find that the time keeper just to find out they aren’t real. Loki gets pruned and where he is welcomed by other variants in the void.
After some troubles, they go to meet “He Who Remains” played by Jonathan Majors where he explains the timeline and how their being there puts the timeline at a threshold. A heated fight between them ends with Sylvie sending Loki back to the TVA and then killing He Who Remains, unleashing an infinite amount of alternate timelines. When Loki returns he finds that no one knows who he is and the multiverse is unraveling.
With this shocking cliffhanger we start season 2. Directors Benson and Moorhead took it upon themselves to continue the storyline full of suspense. With only the first few episodes released, Loki has the audience captivated and confused.
The second season of Loki succeeds in having a lot of fun. By episode two, it continues its time-travel thriller, with Loki and Mobius being dispatched on missions that are special to several eras. Our heroes dress like Gangs of New York for an intense hunt through 19th-century Chicago, and they try to find Sylvie in a 1980s McDonald’s where romantic tension still lingers between them. The design is even more amazing than it was in the previous season, especially the thoughtful stylizing of the TVA building, where every computer monitor is shaped like a bright orange basketball and is surrounded by filing cabinets that are tarnished aquamarine. Even their characters add a lot of solutions to the complicated plot.
With only a few episodes currently released, it is hard to know how all the pieces of the puzzle will be solved. Loki is a super convoluted series that has received some mixed reviews because of its overlapping storylines. Some say that Marvel is still going through its “slump.” By directors Benson and Moorhead making the decision to keep Loki a story line with cliffhangers every episode, the audience finds itself more captivated and willing to continue watching the series unlike other Marvel series.
Loki season 2, overall, is probably one of Marvel’s best series and the change of directors has only made it better. We can’t wait to see how the season will end as new and old relationships will play out. If you are up for the challenge of following the complex storyline of one of your favorite Marvel villains, Loki is definitely the series for you.

Overall 4.5/5
