“My mom is Ms. Kaur and she teaches bio for freshmen and sophomores.
In freshman year, I tried to be very quiet about it because, in my head, it was a weird situation. I don’t know what I expected would happen, but eventually, people would find out. Now, most people know that Ms. Kaur is my mom, and I realized all of the awkwardness that I thought would occur was just in my head. No one actually made fun of me.
There are some advantages to my mom being a teacher at Irvington. I think my mom’s presence compels me to do better in school because she is right there and there are definitely expectations. Over the summer she’ll try and teach me certain things about biology and she will try her best to make study guides or plans for me so that I can do better. Aside from Biology, she will try to teach me other subjects to the best of her ability, and if ever I need some, she’ll give me practice problems. Even in school, I can always go to her class to print something or if I need help.
There are also times when it has been a stressful day, and as much as I love and care about my friends, they aren’t always the ones I want to go to with my problems. In these cases, my mom being at the school helps out as there is no tension between us and she can just be there for me. Initially, I was kind of embarrassed about her being a teacher at Irvington, but as the years went on, I realized my mom is my mom and it may not be a bad thing to have her around the school. I realized it’s nice to have who is always there for me, whether it’s for school things or just to have someone who I can rely on.”
