For me, the aspect of leadership that’s always stood out to me is being directly involved with the student body and planning big events throughout the year. Throughout the past few years as class officer, I’ve experienced planning homecoming, one of the biggest events at Irvington, and it basically holds everything that I love about leadership. Being Vice President, I get to lead homecoming next year, an event that’s not only limited to one class but for all. That’s what I love about leadership, and I couldn’t think of a better way to spend my last year.
Election week was definitely stressful; in past years for leadership I’ve only ran within my class, so for this election, it was a huge change with all four grades impacting votes. I knew that I had to do more outreach to get freshmen who may not know me as well to vote for me, and even reach out to sophomores. I was running against two other candidates, Alyson and Nandini, who I’ve worked with individually and are super qualified: I had super tough competition.
For my campaign, one of the main things I wanted to stress was actual feedback forms. A lot of the time, our feedback may come through the form of comments on our Instagram, but I want a healthier way to take feedback. It’s not productive or healthy to get feedback in the way we do right now, so I really want us to find a way to take feedback and actually implement it. I also wanted to highlight clubs and club presidents. As a president of a club that doesn’t really get a lot of recognition itself, I want to support my peers and other clubs on campus that struggle with publicizing.
I’m really excited to see who the class officers are, who I get to work with, and talk about our plans. Everything about homecoming is something that I can not wait to work on, especially in a position where I can oversee the details. I’m super excited to be back in ASG for another year, especially as VP, to make my final year in high school count. I have a ton many ideas to implement, and I just can’t wait to get in action!
