On September 3, Irvington’s Girls’ golf team kicked off the season with a close game against Moreau Catholic High, with Moreau coming out on top with a score of 231-249.
The match started smoothly with both Zainab Medhi (10) and Hsieh hitting well throughout the first few holes. However, the team began to face some resistance as Moreau slowly began to catch up. Irvington pushed back, but unfortunately, the game ended neck-and-neck with Moreau barely in the lead. Nevertheless, players felt that they gave it their all. “Honestly, I tried my best, and even though I missed a few putts, I think I performed fairly well, shooting 39”, says Mehdi.
Overall, the team didn’t take this loss too critically, as this was only the first game of the season. They took the game as a learning lesson, as Medhi said, “We learned not to let one bad shot ruin our entire round and to keep a positive attitude throughout the whole game”, says Mehdi. “I think that since this is the first game of the season, we still have a lot of room for improvement and practice as a team, so I’m not too worried”.
The players believe there are still many skills that the team can improve upon. Hsieh said, “I think we can all get better on putting, because the short game is one of the most crucial parts of golf, as in, that’s where we can start scoring better.” The team seems optimistic about the rest of the season and expects to do well as they get to know each other better and play together throughout the rest of the season.
Individual performance-wise, Captain Ishita Kapoor (11) said “I need to put in a little bit more work during practice and overall just not getting nervous during the tee shots. I think nerves really affect the way my game goes, so I need to learn how to not let those get in my head.” Still, Irvington kept their cool throughout the match against Moreau, not easily backing down
She also stated that as the captain, she wants to see more team bonding throughout the season, as it helps with morale and performance. Going into this season, she said she is excited to see how the team can continue their 3-year streak of being the league champions. You can attend the next game on October 3rd against Washington.
