From August 26 to 30th, Irvington hosted Club Intro Week, an event where different clubs on campus set up booths at the cafeteria during lunch to introduce themselves to students. Throughout the week, the cafeteria buzzed with conversation and excitement as students walked around and saw what the clubs had to offer.
The event started off on Monday with various activity and hobby clubs, such as Creative Writing, and Visual Arts. On Tuesday, students got to learn about the diverse cultural clubs on campus, examples ranging from Irvington’s Indopak to MEChA. On Wednesday, the spotlight was on clubs like Interact and American Heart Association (Irvington’s service clubs), and lastly, the event finished off with academic clubs on Thursday with Irvington’s best-known clubs: DECA, Debate, Model UN, and more.
In preparation for the event, ASG set up canopies in the cafeteria and gave each club a designated section to set up their booths. Officers set up their club’s poster boards and interest forms, ready to engage with incoming students and talk about their planned initiatives for this school year. During the week, students were able to navigate through different sections and colorful poster boards, speaking to members of various clubs they were interested in.
This week has been important for new students, especially freshman or transfer students, to get a well-rounded understanding of the clubs on campus. “We wanted to give smaller clubs more exposure and spotlight, especially because on Maze Day, they may have been overshadowed by the larger clubs,” said Jolene Cheung (10), who is part of the ASG Inter-Club Council. “The way it was set up made it easier for students to see multiple clubs in one place, as opposed to having to attend multiple club intro meetings.”
The events this week have also proved successful for clubs hoping to increase their membership and outreach. “[Club Intro Week] has been an amazing opportunity to expand our reach to the student body, because we are able to showcase our club and tell everyone what we have planned. We currently have a lot of people who have shown interest,” explained Finance Club President Ian Law (11).
Many clubs already have activities, meetings, and competitions set to take place in the near future. Anika Krishnan (12), a co-president of IHS Biomedical Engineering has stated, “We have a new, fresh officer team ready for the new year with new events. One of our most popular events is a prosthetics-building event which will be coming back this November.”
With the immense creativity and collaboration of clubs reflected at Club Intro Week, students at Irvington await an exciting school year with a diverse and accomplished student body.
