This summer, Logan Moffit (@logagm on TikTok), went viral for his videos where he showed himself preparing and eating whole cucumbers. While he was originally known for his Korean and Asian food content, such as making his own kimchi, he’s now more commonly known for his signature phrase “sometimes you just need to eat a whole cucumber.”
Logan’s videos typically include a quart size deli container and a mandolin in his kitchen, but he has switched it up with different locations, like the middle of the ocean while treading water. His original recipe includes soy sauce, fish sauce, sugar, sesame oil, garlic, spring onions, sesame seeds, and “some MSG, obviously,” another phrase a cucumber video will never be without. Some of Logan’s other viral recipes include a Lox Bagel inspired recipe, and a California Roll inspired one.
The original recipe, which is oftentimes known as the “Din Tai Fung cucumbers,” comes in at an astounding 10/10 despite its simplicity. I would recommend brining the cucumber slices in salt first and then draining the liquid so the cucumber is extra crunchy.
The Lox Bagel inspired recipe includes traditional bagel toppings such as smoked salmon, cream cheese, everything but the bagel seasoning, capers, red onions, avocado, and MSG. This recipe gets an 8/10 because I personally don’t like capers and would never put them on my bagel. However, most of these ingredients are relatively easy to get your hands on, which is a plus.
On the other hand, while the California Roll inspired cucumber is definitely delicious, the ingredients are less common, such as the imitation crab. Some other ingredients include avocado, Kewpie mayo, sesame seeds, whipped cream cheese, and like always, MSG. As a sushi lover (but not a California roll consumer), this cucumber recipe gets a solid 9/10.
Outside of his cucumber recipes, Logan keeps himself relevant by incorporating other trends into his recipes, such as very demurely and mindfully slicing his cucumbers with his mandolin to prevent injury, sticking to his trademark and well-loved video cucumber video style, and continuing to give his viewers what they want, more cucumbers!
