On August 16th, 2024, Beabadoobee released her third studio album, “This is How Tomorrow Moves.” She announced the album by dropping her new single, “Take a Bite,” teasing the sound and themes of the upcoming album. The album was produced by Rick Rubin at the Shangri-La studio in Malibu, and is a big shift from her previous sound.
Beebadobee’s new album showcased her new sound, as she moves away from younger teenage “bedroom indie” into more alternative and pop-rock songs. The live in-house band highlights instrumentals and compositions, rather than her previous focus on lyrics and vocals. The Guitar and percussion have more weight, with an emphasis on layered melodies and prominent rhythms. Many critics describe this music as her first “grown up” album, her first musical progression as she transitions into adulthood and heavier topics
“This is How Tomorrow Moves” explores themes such as heartbreak, undecided futures, change, and personal growth. Songs such as “Tie my Shoes” and “Girl Song” offer messages to her younger self. For example “Girl Song” has poignant lyrics about self forgiveness, as Bea sings, “ All I want to do is find the words to make it up to you. Making the same mistakes.” She tries to forgive her past self for all of her insecurity and mistakes, while still feeling the pressure to “fix” herself. The song is vulnerable, and resonates with listeners while providing a sense of comfort. The album also debuts the new version of herself, such as “Beaches” and “Take a Bite.” These tracks have a mature refined feel, as she sings stronger and more confident, yet remains authentic.
When interviewed about the album she describes the same sensation of growing up, saying, ““I think I’m more aware of my actions in these songs. In my previous records, I would consistently sing about my reaction towards other people’s doings, like a blame game. But in this record, it’s accepting that there’s an inevitability of my fault in there too. Whether it’s childhood trauma or relationship issues, it takes two to tango in everything.” This idea heavily correlates with messages in her songs such as “Take a Bite,” “Girl Song,” and “Tie my Shoes.” She explores complicated relationships and difficult past experiences, while remaining unfiltered and unguarded.
Some of the best songs on the album are “Beaches” and “Take a Bite.” “Beaches” has a very nostalgic sound, almost reminiscent of the 90s, and combines indie with pop rock. This creates an upbeat yet soothing and wistful song. The same emphasis on instrumentals plays a big role in the song, as the live music being played makes it sound more authentic, with less editing. The composition of the music is beautiful, and very well thought out. While the song is more upbeat, the lyrics are personal and convey conflicting emotions. “Take a Bite,” has a very distinct grungy sound with distorted instruments and an energetic beat. While it gave a taste of the new album when it came out, it had a very distinct style, making it a smart move to release this single first. The well written hook catches the listeners attention right away, and the fast tempo and rhythm maintains it.
Overall, Beabadoobee’s album was a 4.5/5. It fulfilled its purpose: showcasing listeners the new era of beabadoobee’s music, and left them excited for what’s next to come.
