My past three years at the voice have been really fun. I started as a staff writer, but now I’m the opinions editor, and I’ve had the chance to grow both as a writer and as a person. As a staff writer my first year, it was really fun to see how the paper was made and to contribute to it. It’s fun as an Now as the Opinions Editor, I get to see all the different kinds of viewpoints people have, even if they’re silly, like one time, we wrote an article about giant spiders and farming them, and whether that was ethical or not.
In the beginning, I was torn between becoming the Opinions or Entertainment editor. I did my apprenticeships under Entertainment but I liked Opinions because you get to share your opinion about all sorts of topics, and you have a lot more depth. In contrast, in entertainment, you really only get to focus on entertainment-related opinions.
The opinion section has helped me focus my ideas quite a bit. When I started at The Voice, I wrote flowery writing, where I used fluff all the time. By being in journalism, my editors helped me figure out what matters and what you need to focus on, and what you need to elaborate on.
Opinions is one of those sections that just kind of work because you can cover anything, and there’s nothing ever that’s off-limits. Last year, we had this article about celebrities and whether they should use their voices to speak out, and sometimes it was on the front page, so people kind of mistook it as a news article versus a opinions article. We definitely do get a few controversial articles once in a while, but I think it’s bound to happen, and that’s okay, because the whole point of this section is to show everyone our voices.
