As a student who took the double accelerated pathway, be advised that this is an incredibly important selection that will significantly shape your underclassmen experience. When making a choice, not only consider your interest and experience with math but the amount of time you will be able to dedicate towards the course.
For those students who have dared to take Double Accelerated—welcome to the club! Due to the multi-year and challenging nature of the pathway, you will be friends with some of the sharpest math students and take classes from some of Irvington’s best teachers. You are sure to make many new friends, as the saying goes: “nobody bonds faster than a struggling math class.” It is very likely that you will need support from those around you—whether that be forming a study circle with friends, seeking professional tutoring, or even getting help from family members like older siblings or parents. Due to the sheer amount of time you’ll spend studying for tests and quizzes, mathematics will start coming easy to you—but your grade might not reflect that. Many students in the double accelerated program score the 99th percentile on SAT Math. Your GPA will definitely be more vulnerable but in a UC-weighted course.
For those taking the Single Accelerated program: you will still be learning the same content—just at a slower pace. Your math class will be less taxing of a time-commitment but it can be challenging for those who aren’t passionate about math or STEM. Many students still go on to take other rigorous courses like AP Physics C, but with less mathematical aptitude. Other STEM classes will become more of a self-study.
