I got into New York University Early Decision, and I’m super excited! I applied to NYU because it was a school I thought I had a good chance of getting into, and it would be great for my intended major: economics. Most importantly though, it’s in a city that I love, New York, with great opportunities for internships and jobs.
I applied to the College of Arts and Sciences as an environmental science major. Even though I do intend to major in economics, my strategy was to apply for a major easier for me to get into in the same school, and then switch to economics. Environmental science made more sense for me to apply to as a major, because a lot of my extracurriculars align with it. I’ve done a lot of research on alternative energy options, like solar and wind, as well as taking classes on related topics outside of school.
The application process wasn’t too bad itself because I started early, right after the early decisions application was released. I didn’t really speak to a lot of people who went to NYU about applying, but I did talk to friends and my counselor when writing my essays, helping me align my essays with the ideals of NYU. I know a lot of people don’t always know what school they want to Early Decision to, but I was always set on NYU. Visiting the “campus” in March made that clear for me, with the fast paced life-style, diversity of the city, and the general vibes of the city and the school.
I found out that I got in when I was sitting with my friends at lunch. I opened the portal and we all saw that I was accepted and started celebrating. It was an extremely happy occasion, and all of my friends were so supportive about it, it was an exciting moment.
My advice for everyone applying to college, whether it be NYU or any other college, is to start applications early, and focus on creating great essays. I honestly didn’t think I had extraordinary extracurriculars, but my compelling essays were definitely a major factor in why I think I got in. Essay’s can often be the make or break differentiating factor, so no matter what you think of your extracurriculars, spend a lot of time on your essays; proofreading, getting other’s advice, and perfecting them.
Getting into NYU was incredible, and I’m so excited to live in New York and see what the city and school have to offer me!
