Are you a musical theatre fan but would rather be behind the curtains instead of onstage? Stagecraft is the class that runs the plays, from the set to operating the show. Learn more about this arts class that offers a variety of experiences and skills.
Stagecraft is a seventh-period course, meaning you can keep all the other classes you want. The class also counts for arts credit and requires no prerequisites. Whether you want to join a community, make new friends, or develop different skills, Stagecraft is a unique course worth trying.
A typical day in Stagecraft can vary depending on the preparation that is needed for the show. Stagecraft is in charge of designing, painting, and building the set, and a couple of weeks before the show, Stagecraft will have tech week where they practice operating the lights, sound, and setting up props. Although it requires a lot of time commitment, “It’s a really rewarding process to work on a long-term project with your favorite people” said Jithya Varatharajan (12).
Stagecraft also promotes a close sense of community among its members. The class is split into different groups such as design and construction, and these groups can then be divided into lights, sound, and backstage roles. Stagecraft members learn many different skills, ranging from teamwork to using power tools. Through rehearsals outside of class, you can connect with many people of the same interests in this class.
If you have a free elective spot next year, or want a fun art class that can help you develop your passions and a variety of skills, Stagecraft is a good option.
