Every year, the Grammy Awards is presented by the Recording Academy of the United States to recognize achievements in the music industry. The awards, or “Grammys”, that are given out are highly sought after by popular artists, thus the results are often controversial amongst fans. Besides the awards, the Grammys also features strong performances and unique red-carpet looks. The 67th Grammys took place on February 2, and was hosted by Trevor Noah.
This year, the Grammys featured shocking wins and unexpected losses that left fans in a frenzy. Beyonce emerged as one of the big winners of the Grammys. After 99 Grammy nominations, she finally won the elusive Album of the Year award with her album “Cowboy Carter”. She also took home the Best Country Album award, demonstrating Beyonce’s belief in transcending genres and limits as an artist. Beyonce won 3 Grammys, making her total 35 Grammys, the most in history. Kendrick Lamar won both Record of the Year and Song of the Year with his diss track “Not Like Us”. The song took the Internet by storm amidst Lamar’s feud with Drake and swept all 5 of its nominated Grammy categories.
New pop artists like Sabrina Carpenter, Charli XCX, and Chapelle Roan were also highly anticipated. Chapell Roan, known for her songs like “Good Luck, Babe!”, “Pink Pony Club” and “Hot To Go”, won the award for best new artist. Sabrina Carpenter won both Pop Vocal Album and Pop Solo Performance of the year with her hit album “Short n’ Sweet” and performance of “Espresso”. Other new artists like Benson Boone and Chali XCX were featured with performances.
Beyond the awards, the Grammys have evolved to include many more performances, showcasing the biggest stars in the industry. Grammy winners like Chapell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter performed their hit songs. Other performances featured legends like Shakira and Stevie Wonder. John Legend himself performed a tribute to Quincy Jones.
The Grammys has also moved beyond music to highlight social issues over the years. The awards opened with a performance of Randy Newman’s “I Love L.A”, a tribute to the LA fires. The board also includes more voters who are young, people of color, and women. These changes reflect the changing demographics of America and shape how the awards are given. For example, rapper Doechii won the Best Album of the Year award, being the 3rd woman to ever win in the category. The increasing diversity of the Grammys allows the awards to represent musicians from all different backgrounds and genres.
Whether you loved the Grammys or hated the results of the awards, the 67th Grammys certainly was an eventful one. Full of exciting performances and lovable artists, the Grammys leaves us with anticipation for how next year will play out.
