The Irvington Varsity Girls Soccer Team hosted their senior night on Thursday, February 6, during their game against Newark Memorial. Although losing 0-8, the team showed great persistence, playing in both rain and wind and coming close on multiple occasions to score a goal.
Following their game against Newark, the Varsity Girl’s record officially stands at 1-15.
Many improvements still have to be made to the team, according to captain Natalie Brahan (12). “Just overall communication. Being able to trust your teammates, having their back, and over-communicating so our next moves on the field are clear.” Head Coach Becerra also added: “I particularly emphasize [to the team] teamwork and team effort.”
However, despite the losing record, the season was full of growth for a young team boasting great potential.
“One high of the season was the freshmen. They improved a lot, and are concentrated, focused, and hard workers during practice,” commented Coach Becerra. Brahan shared the same sentiment as she said, “I see people putting in the extra effort [towards the end of the season] than they did at the beginning, and I’m really proud of that.”
Most importantly, the community in the team was one that made experiences much more valuable.
“It’s kind of like a family,” said forward Linna Sha (11). “It feels great just to be around the girls every day, and even if we are struggling we are going through it together.”
The next season with Girls Varsity will no doubt boast an even larger increase in the team’s skill sets and improvements. Coach Becerra states that he will encourage the girls to continue playing soccer even during the off-season so that they can return next year stronger than ever. He encourages the seniors as well to continue the sport even after high school.
The team will play their very last game against American High School on February 13, officially marking the end of the 2024-2025 soccer season.
