Are you [painfully] single and looking for something to do this Valentine’s Day? Read this guide to find out how to survive spend the most romantic day of the year!
- Third Wheeling Your Friends’ Dates
If you’re looking to gain relationship experience beforehand and are a visual learner, third wheeling your friends’ dates is the best option for you. Even though you might end up walking on the grass while your friends walk on the sidewalk, there are many important takeaways you can get from third wheeling.
First, you will learn the importance of paying for your significant other’s expensive meal. You don’t want to be that guy that makes your girlfriend split the cost (or even worse…pay for all of it). Let’s just say that if you do make her pay this time, the next time you go to Din Tai Fung, it will be alone.
You’ll also learn which date spots are good and which are absolutely atrocious. Thinking of taking them to Eataly? Great choice. Ice skating in San Francisco? Splendid. However, if you’re thinking of taking them to Target and In-N-Out in Pacific Commons…just pack it up and leave. Even worse, if you’re thinking of venturing to the gas station across Irvington…you might as well be sending a “Please break up with me” text.
- Galentines
Galentines, the ultimate gathering of single high school girls. This is the perfect opportunity for you to explain your single status. If you want to stay on the safer side, use the “Guys, I’m locked in for school; I don’t want a relationship!” If you’re feeling bold, use the “Trust me, we’re going to be locked in by Spring Fling!”
There are many fun activities you and your friends can partake in at Galentines. First, start off with “Pin the Tail on the Donkey”. (Warning: Your friends may mention that the image of the donkey reminds them of…your old talking stage.) Next, you can make your own chocolate strawberries (since no one will be giving them to you). Finally, you can end the night off by holding a Valentine’s gift exchange.
- Watching Romance Movies
This is a safer option if you’d like to stay in and cozy up in a fluffy blanket (alone, of course) on Valentine’s Day. There exists a plethora of great romance movies to watch on this day, but we’ve narrowed it down to two primary options that are sure to suit everyone’s likings.
Our first recommendation is the teen high school movie classic: “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.” Even if you don’t have your own Peter Kavinsky, it’s always nice to relax on a Friday night and see what life would’ve been like if you did.
Our second recommendation is “The Notebook.” You may not be the one receiving a letter every day for 365 days or the one whose star-crossed lover builds your dream house for you, but it’s always nice to dream.
- Attend a Speed Dating Event
Speed dating is like the “IRL” version of stalking Instagram stories. Instead of hitting the heart button or sliding into their DMs with a corny pickup line, you can shoot your shot face-to-face. (Warning: There is a 70% increase in your chances of being labelled “chopped.”) That likely won’t happen to you though, as long as you identify as a 6’5’’ feminist (extra points if your most-listened-to Spotify artist is Lana Del Rey or Clairo).
What makes speed dating a good option is that you don’t need to stick to the same person for the whole time (another warning: do NOT do this when you are actually in a relationship). You will be able to hear the stories of many people and may actually make some new friends in the process. There will certainly be a lot to bond over due to your shared single relationship status and mutual extreme desperation.
In the end, it’s up to you on how to spend your Valentine’s Day. Just know that there are still fun and exciting ways to spend February 14th, whether you’re painfully single, stuck in a situationship, or happily taken. Happy Valentine’s Day!
