On the week of March 17th , Irvington hosted its annual Versus Week along with Spring Fling on March 21st. Versus Week consisted of a battle in school spirit with Freshmen and Juniors teaming up against Sophomores and Seniors, competing in dodgeball tournaments, stacking up spirit points in dress up days, a staff versus students basketball game, the class dance, and ending the week with the Spring Fling and the Blacklight Rally.
Versus Week consisted of a multitude of activities in which the four classes were split into 2 teams competing for the most spirit points and other prizes. Shreen Mahanty (11) describes the best parts of Versus Week, “It involved a lot of involvement from the Class Council…it was really interesting seeing how the different classes were able to come together and collaborate with one another, working towards a common goal, whether that be through class dance or dressing up for spirit points.”
Throughout the week, students were rewarded spirit points for dressing up for different themes such as “Mathletes versus Athletes”, “Adam Sandler versus Men in Black”, and “Class Tee Day”.
Vedha Venkatesh (11) talks about her favorite part about dressing up, “My favorite part about the week was definitely dressing up. It was so fun participating in the different themes and taking funny pictures with my friends. i think my favorite day was Adam Sandler day it was so fun seeing all the outfits”
Following the battle between classes, the class dance on March 21st was the last event of Versus Week, featuring dynamic performances from all grades, with Freshmen and Juniors being declared as the winners. Mahanty goes more into the most memorable parts of the class dance, stating “I thought it was really fun seeing everyone attempt to dance, even if they’re not necessarily skilled at that. I think it really brought us together as a class, because it forced us to spend time with, get to know, and just have fun with each other.”
At the end of Versus Week, the Spring Fling brought its own host of school-wide entertainment. The Fling opened with a Blacknight Rally that featured various performances, from dances, singalongs, to one memorable sword fight. Glow Sticks were provided to audience members for the Rally. Afterparty attendees were then treated to games, picture-taking, food, and a mosh pit.
Spring Fling attendees Ira Kulkari (12) and Tesha Gowell (12) had positive opinions regarding the event. “I have gone to Versus Week and Spring Fling every year,” said Kulkari “The Black Night Rally is always especially fun and engaging.”
Gowell shared her own thoughts on the weeklong event. “I always really love dance performances. I liked Suren Bandra’s.” Overall, Gowell says the event was well-planned and engaging.
”It’s really great at building a strong community,” she said, “Playing games, competing, and taking photos with friends.”
Having a consistently outstanding performance, it is doubtless that this year’s March Event was a success. The different activities, performances, and games were planned with care, and from students’ responses, these efforts paid off. This year’s events overall showed excellent organization and planning, and it is likely future Spring Flings will share a similar success.
