It’s holiday season, and the winter coats and hot chocolate always create a spirit of festivity during this time of the year. Nevertheless, what makes this season truly magical are the Christmas lights. Regardless of if you are a lights fanatic, or simply like to drive by them, here are some top places in the Bay Area to see the lights.
The Oakland Temple is a temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and is notable for its white, grand architecture. The building is monolithic and stands tall, centered between two rows of palm trees. During Christmas time, the palm trees are adorned with colorful lights to create a mesmerizing pathway towards the temple. Surrounding the trees are fences which are also ornate with the gold colored lights. The lights, coupled with the existing gardens, pathways, and stream, create a really aesthetic and beautiful look to the display. I would rate this place a 9/10.
At Union Square, San Francisco, many people love to experience the magic of winter. The grand centerpiece at this location is the towering Christmas tree, which is 83 feet tall. The tree is decorated with about 43,000 gold and white lights, evoking a warm charm and creating a comforting atmosphere for visitors. The tree is the focal point, and surrounding it are shopping complexes, allowing visitors to shop while they experience the lights. There is also a small ice rink for visitors to enjoy. The Christmas tree elevates the whole setting, while also being the main source of illumination. There are not many other lights surrounding the area, and it would have created a more festive look if the other shops were decorated. The lack of decorations around Union Square makes the display underwhelming overall, which makes me rate it a 6/10.
Crippsmas Place is a tourist attraction in Fremont that brings out childhood nostalgia and Christmas spirit. Over 80 houses decorate their front yards with thousands of Christmas lights and hundreds of cut-out cardboard characters from famous movies and tv shows. Some of the memorable characters seen include Charlie Brown, Disney princesses like Snow White, and Mickey Mouse. The experience is especially unique as it is completely drive-through, so viewers can pass by houses in the comfort of their own cars. Crippsmas place is a recognition of community and lasting tradition to spread Christmas spirit every year. I would rate it a 9.5/10 for creativity and uniqueness.
