The boys golf season comes to an end, with a record of 7 wins and 5 losses. The team’s victories came as a result of their teamwork and effort for improvement.
The team was led by Jason Kai (12) and Brian Jin (11), as the low score leaders on average, which means they consecutively held the best scores amongst the team. The team couldn’t have had success without other plays though, with Coach Harrington noting, “No one player was a standout player. This was truly a team effort.” Justin Lee (11) and Ivan Kim (10) also played well, contributing significantly to the team. This year, new freshmen helped improve the team, with Nathan Chiang and Preston Shi having good seasons.
Through wins and loses, the team stuck together until the end. Each golfer plays individually, but each score is added to the team’s total. “Having a team to worry about definitely forced me to become a less impulsive person, to prevent playing so badly as to lower our team’s sum.” said team captain Jason Kai (12). Additionally, the team supports each other mentally to play the best they can during games and practices. Sihyun Wee (10) noted “My teammates and coach were essential in inspiring me to improve. Because of my teammates, golf was fun and enjoyable to go after school and practice”.
The team also attributed their success to their coach, Larry Harrington. Coach Harrington was instrumental to keeping morale high and encouraging the players in tough moments. When asked about Coach Larry’s impact on his season, Sihyun Wee (10) said, “Golf is all in the mind and his help allowed me to overcome various challenges”.
Going into next year the team seeks to keep improving and play in the league championships. Ideas such as incorporating full chipping and putting practice sessions have been proposed to improve in different aspects of the game. Additionally Jason Kai and Brian Jin both qualified for All League by placing top ten in the league. They will play in League finals later in May.
