Helping my dad work on his motorcycle got me into learning more about car repairs and to join the ROP Autotech class. Learning about how costly car repairs are also showed me that this would be a good skill to have. My dad has been teaching me for the most part, and then the Autotech teacher Mr. Finley taught me a lot of new skills. I’ve been doing this for around a year and have gained some site experience – so far I’ve done two oil changes, changed the brake oil on many cars, and fixed a brake caliper. I’ve really enjoyed hanging out with my friends in Autotech and learning new ways to fix cars.
I’m currently not working on anything specifically, but I am learning how to work electrical systems and practicing before I work on Tesla’s and other electrical cars. There aren’t any specific projects I’d like to start right now – I’m mainly focused on making sure I have the ability to fix the cars my parents have, that way I can save them costs in the future. Learning how to make basic repairs on cars is going to help me in the long run.
A valuable lesson I’ve learned is that you really have to be patient and work hard in order to fully understand how a car works — how to get off bolts and learn to pull off a lot of weird maneuvers. I don’t plan on using these skills for a job, but it’ll be really helpful in the future when I get my own car.
