On Friday, April 11, students, parents, and coaches gathered in the main gym during lunch for Senior Signing Day. The event, which was organized by Irvington’s Athletics Department for the first time, honored the achievements of student athletes who have decided to continue playing their sports at the college level. This year, two seniors – Brayden Jaksa and Matthew Forbes – officially committed to continue playing their sports after high school.
Brayden Jaksa, who has played varsity baseball at Irvington for the past 4 years, has signed to play Division I baseball at the University of Oregon. His name and photo have also been added to the trophy case outside the main gym. Jaksa explained that the first college baseball game he had attended was at the University of Oregon, and it eventually became one of his dream schools. “They started recruiting during my freshman year, and we’ve been building our relationship over the phone and with visits to the school,” he said.
Matthew Forbes, who has played football throughout high school, has officially committed to San Jose City College to continue playing as a running back.
The event began with introductions by the athletic directors, followed by speeches by the athletes’ coaches. Baseball Coach Frank Durand and Football Coach Anthony Jackson gave speeches for Jaksa and Forbes. Coach Jackson said, “My favorite memory of Matthew is seeing him play during the first half against Hayward High last year. He had an interception, a fumble recovery, and two touchdowns in one half. He really gave us hope in that game.”
Both athletes had close people and their coaches present at the signing for support. For Jaksa, this was his girlfriend Maya McCartney (12) and his father, who he says introduced him to the sport at the age of 4. “I want him to have a great education, have fun, and continue playing the sport that he loves,” his father noted. “Hopefully that will get him to the next level, which is what he ultimately wants to do.”
Jaksa spoke about how his loved ones have supported him through this process. “My family, coaches, and friends have never told me what I had to do – instead, they’ve always let it be my decision,” he said.
Forbes also had his girlfriend, Alyssandra Perez (12), and his family members present at the signing. His mother noted, “My hopes for him are that he continues to develop and grow, and above all, to keep his positive attitude with and have fun.”
As the event wrapped up, family, teammates, and coaches gathered for hugs, photos, and congratulations. Senior Signing highlighted the accomplishments of these senior athletes as they take this next step in their athletic careers.
