On March 21, 2025, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures released the live action Snow White. Directed by Marc Webb and starring Rachel Zelger, this production was one of the most costly and time consuming films to make, spanning over 2 years due to COVID-19 delays and costing over 270 million dollars.
Overall, the movie was mediocre, with a couple highlights. Gal Gadot was captivating as the evil queen, and used power and raw emotion in her performance. The enormously large budget also shone through, with intricate costumes and costly visuals. While the movie was visually appealing, it lacked that classic Disney charm and nostalgia that has enchanted children for decades. Furthermore, It didn’t provide any emotional appeal or have any real meaning as most remakes have.
There were however, many issues with the movie. Rachel Zegler, who is otherwise an amazing actor, felt very robotic and disconnected from the story. There was absolutely no chemistry between Zegler and her co lead, Andrew Burnap, making the movie feel more cold, lacking that definitive young Disney love.
The script also felt very forced, with dialogues and jokes intended to be funny, but didn’t actually come across that way. There wasn’t much depth to the movie, making the experience shallow and uninspiring. The movie was intended to be a musical, but none of the songs really picked up traction or were outstanding in any way.
Disney originally planned to do several live action remakes; however, after watching the catastrophic failure of Snow White, they are yet to consider further actions, Tangled, which was supposed be a live action, was put on hold as the studio is reconsidering its choices.
