“Each day is different. Some days it’s very slow and some days it’s hectic with constant interruptions. Parents coming in to pick up students, or students coming in when they’re hurt or sick, so the job is all about prioritizing your tasks and being able to multitask at the same time.
I’ve been an attendance clerk for almost eight years. I really enjoy working with the kids and seeing them grow. It’s fulfilling to see them first come in as a freshman when they don’t know anything, to eventually reaching their goals, enjoying their sports and activities, and graduating.
That being said, coming into the job I didn’t know a lot about things happening for kids at home. I didn’t enjoy learning about broken families and broken homes that some kids are going through.
Everyone thinks we’re kind of like the police. Why weren’t you here? Why weren’t you there? What people don’t understand is that we care about your safety. Years ago there was a girl who was abducted. The parents said she was at school all day and nobody notified them that she wasn’t in class. It was a bad ending and I want to stress to people that we don’t just give out tardies just to give out tardies. If your parents call and just say “Hey I know she was late” we clear the detentions. It’s just a matter of us knowing that your parents know where you’re at.
