On Friday, December 1, the Irvington Girls’ Varsity Basketball team claimed a compelling 58-43 victory against Willow Glen High School at home. As of Friday’s game, the team is currently 2-0 and undefeated in their pre-season games.

Both teams battled in a tough, low-scoring first quarter, however, the Lady Vikings quickly regained momentum in the second quarter by scoring four three-pointers in a row. Notably, Captain Lauren Trinh (11) made two of those baskets, leading the end of the second quarter by a score of 29-20.

“After halftime we came into the third quarter with really high spirits and we played good defense. We went on a 10-point run and got a lot of steals too,” explained Trinh.

Throughout the game, the entire team did a commendable job in attacking the box and using aggression to their advantage. Players were making their own lanes and were able to drive to the basket to get points.

“It’s kind of a weird split on the team this year where we have a lot of old girls, and a lot of young girls at the same time. The younger girls are new, they’re not as confident so we focused on them being more confident with shooting and taking the ball,” said Captain Nazaneen Hasanzada (12).

Teamwork and offense are important factors for the team this year, both of which were executed graciously on Friday’s game. The Lady Vikings focus on factors such as layups,  and transitions such as running back and forth on the court.

“We worked with each other really well and played as a team. Communication was much better on the court,” elaborated shooting guard Laasya Mandela (12) as a reason for their win.

After their win against West Wolfpack two days prior, the team has successfully carried improvements on factors such as teamwork and confidence into their game against Willow Glen.

“A lot of our team is the same as last year so we’re all tight-knit and able to practice really hard this season,” said Trinh.

The Lady Vikings are confident with their start and expect to maintain a similar record throughout the season.
“We’re better than a lot of teams in comparison to last year. We have a high chance of making the playoffs and potentially getting a high seed,” shared Hasanzada.
