Item One: Apple Cinnamon Sourdough
Garnering significant attention online, the Apple Cinnamon Sourdough quickly became a viral fan favorite across social media.
My first impression of this bread was very positive. The texture was soft and tender, with small dried apple cubes mixed into the batter for added chewiness. As the result of apples being incorporated both inside and on top of the loaf, their flavor was the most dominant element, leaving only a faint hint of cinnamon. While the spice is technically present, it’s subtle enough to miss. This was a bit of a letdown, especially considering how boldly the cinnamon flavor shines in Trader Joe’s classic cinnamon rolls, although this could be a selling factor for customers looking for a staple bread for fall.
I would rate this bread a 4 out of 5 stars, only removing a star for the lack of cinnamon.
Item Two: Pumpkin Pie Spice Donut Holes
My first impression of these donut holes was slightly negative. Coming in a plastic, slightly humid, half filled bag, I was initially not excited to try these. The texture was far more crumbly than expected, likely due to sitting for a few days before tasting, which can make the glaze wetter and the donuts softer. Rather than the typical bready consistency of most donuts, these felt more like a defective cake. Additionally, while they may have successfully achieved a “pumpkin pie” flavor, they still tasted unpleasant and overly sweet.
I would rate this a 2 out of 5 stars .
Recipe One: Pumpkin Bars
My first impression of these Pumpkin Bars was one of slight shock. Requiring sour cream, vanilla extract, and two types of sugar had me doubting the true convenience of this box mix. Although these ingredients are generally considered household staples, one of the main selling points of a box mix is convenience, a point which this recipe completely misses. Although the preparation was simple, it was surprisingly time-consuming; including bake time, the process took about an hour and fifteen minutes. Unfortunately, the flavor didn’t redeem the effort. The bars sank significantly in the oven, and the overly sour icing failed to mask their lackluster taste. The texture was also disappointing, oddly fudgy and hard in certain places.
I rate this item a 2 out of 5 stars, deducting points for inconvenience and the lack of exceptionality.
Recipe Two: Pumpkin Snickerdoodle Cookies
After hearing mostly positive reviews of these cookies online, I was very excited to try them, especially with the box mix advertising a speedy experience. Initially, I was mildly irked at the way in which the instructions did not follow a clear and logical pattern, but the easy bake made up for it. Unlike many other products, the pumpkin and cinnamon flavors truly shined in these cookies. With a strong pumpkin flavor within the batter and a generous coating of sugar and cinnamon, neither flavor was difficult to locate. Additionally, coming together in under an hour (including baking time) was a massive pro.
I rate these cookies a 4.5 out of 5.
This year, Trader Joe’s shelves transform into a cozy landscape of maple, apple, and cinnamon flavors, each product promising a taste of seasonal nostalgia. This year’s fall items, both boxed and premade, from Trader Joe’s offered a mixed bag of experiences. While the Apple Cinnamon Sourdough and Pumpkin Snickerdoodle Cookies delivered satisfying flavors and seasonal comfort, the Pumpkin Pie Spice Donut Holes and Pumpkin Bars fell short in texture, flavor, or convenience. Overall, there’s something to be found for every pumpkin spice enthusiast, but a few items may leave you craving a stronger taste of fall.
