As the season of giving rolls around, there is no shortage of Irvington students who strive to give back. Fremont Junior Writers (FJW) is just one of the many teams of Irvington students who channel the holiday spirit in what they do for the community. FJW fosters understanding of foundational English reading and writing skills in developing young minds through personalized curriculums. High schoolers under the organization are trained to create class materials, and teach a diverse array of young students these subjects. They have partnered with various elementary schools, such as Lila Bringhurst, Harvey Green and Hirsch Elementary.
FJW has recently finished up their writing program at Hirsch, a 6-week course for young students. But for these young elementary schoolers, this time with FJW is more than just extra class time after school. Beyond the learning, students also participate in fun writing activities, and compete in a friendly writing competition near the end of these programs, earning certificates, valuable skills and memories as keepsakes for their time spent in these classes. For co-Vice President Sihyun Wee (11), overseeing the programs has been an incredibly rewarding experience. “I love seeing the growth in both the students we teach and the staff that I, as a vice president, manage and organize. We always strive to be better through the feedback we get from the parents and organizers of specific programs, and I’m always able to see how the students’ progress happens alongside the development of our organization.” Wee says, highlighting the growth of both students and the organization.
For the high school leaders and teachers themselves FJW offers more than just volunteering experience—it also offers an opportunity to give back to the community, and an opportunity for growth as leaders of the next generation, while allowing them to pursue their passions. “Most of the officers here love English as well,” remarked Teacher Manager Ojal Choudhari (11), “They love writing or grammar, and they also love working with kids. So Fremont Junior Writers is really a way to pursue what we love doing, and help young students at the same time.”
Nonprofit organizations like FJW exemplify how the season of giving goes beyond just physical gifts—It is also about the donation of time, knowledge and guidance to the next generation. Through their careful course planning centered around the growth of the student, these high school students are actively providing the tools for children to flourish as excellent writers and critical thinkers, turning class time into a meaningful way to give back to the community.
In the following months, FJW will be continuing their partnership with local schools and organizations such as Lila Bringhurst, and adjusting their curriculum. “Our program is planning to update our curriculum so that we have more activities to ensure classes are more effective.” said Wee, “as for high schoolers, it’s a great opportunity to put yourself out there and teach with little to no pressure. With the various feedback and care we give to our teachers and curriculum developers, I heavily recommend joining Fremont Junior Writers.” Currently, applications for FJW are open.
