On September 7, Irvington’s Girls Golf team faced off against Mission San Jose’s and Moreau Catholic High School’s respective golf teams. At first things seemed to be going downhill for Irvington.
To start the match, Zoe Anderson (12) got a double par on her first hole. While this was not the ideal start for Irvington, the team persevered through as the tournament went on.
Even with the rough start, team captain Grace Phang (12) pulled through and got a putt from 30 feet away. This inspired the team to come together, especially the freshmen playing in a match for Irvington for the first time.
Overall, all the teams did well and even though it was a close one, Irvington came out on top with a total score of 234. Mission came in second with a total score of 258 and Moreau followed behind with a score of 270.
“Personally, I could have done better,” said Phang. “But as a group, our scores were not that bad.”
“I think we’re capable of playing better, but we’re going to work hard and improve on what we need to work on.” reassured Coach Larry, “If you’re better next time than you were this time you win.”
Some of the other players ended on a high note having gained valuable insight from the game. Anderson says “I improved my swing a bit. Before I was hitting a lot of slices, but now I’m going more straight and left, which tends to be better for golfing.”
“I think they found the commitment to each other,” said Coach Larry. “And the commitment to the team was number one,”
This match marked Irvington’s second win after beating Newark and marked the beginning of Irvington’s winning streak this year.
