The road to Super Bowl LX at Levi’s Stadium was paved by an unresolved conflict from Super Bowls past. While the start of the 2025 NFL season had powerhouse teams like the Buffalo Bills being favored to win the superbowl, the final climactic game was held between two storied franchises with some of the best young talent in the league: the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots.
Though these two franchises were never direct rivals, their feud began in Super Bowl XLIX with a near catastrophic choke by the Seahawks Offense. With the entire Super Bowl on the line, quarterback Russell Wilson threw an interception at the one-yard line, sealing another win for the Patriots dynasty under legends Bill Belichick and Tom Brady, while kick starting a long Seahawks rebuild.
This season, Seahawks coach Mike MacDonald was able to rebuild the Seahawk’s reputation as a threat in the NFC. With new rookies like safety Nick Emmanwori joining the defense, the Seahawks were able to replicate some of what they were able to do in previous years with their legendary “Legion of Boom” defense. It also helped that the Seahawks offense featured the league’s leading receiver in Jaxson Smith-Njigba, and powerful running-back duo Kenneth Walker III and Zach Charbonnet.
This year, much of Seattle’s Super Bowl success could be attributed to their special teams. Punter Michael Dickson and kicker Jason Myers were able to consistently put the team in winning positions.
New England also saw their franchise turn around this season. Although portions of their success can be attributed to easy scheduling, what Patriots coach Mike Vrabel has been able to do is nothing short of amazing, with the team’s previous season record being 4-13, and this season’s record being 14-3.
The Patriots were also led by second year quarterback Drake Maye, who had an MVP caliber season. Maye was the league’s leader in pass completion percentage along with passer rating. Maye’s offense was heavily complimented by the outstanding Patriots defense. Most notable, though, is Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez. Gonzalez has established himself in the league as a solid defender who is able to play at the highest level no matter the condition.
Though the Patriots defense was able to contain the Seahawks best offensive weapon in the first half of the game, the Seahawk’s defensive front eventually overwhelmed New England’s offensive line. The struggle on the Patriots line was primarily seen in rookie Will Campbell, who logged a league playoff record of 14 pressures allowed on the quarterback.
Ultimately, despite great touchdown drives from both teams, Seattle’s defense proved too quick and physical for New England to handle, with the final score being 29-13, culminating in the Seahawks winning their second championship in franchise history.
