After careful consideration, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association, or FIFA, has released a fourth wave of Team Base Camps selected to serve as the training grounds for teams ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Among these selected training grounds is Irvington High School, which will serve as the main pitch for Uzbekistan’s national team. The paired hotel for the athletes will be the Extended Stay America Suites, located on Mission Blvd.
When asked about the location selection, FIFA commissioner Gianni Infantino said, “Irvington High School is a premier location, especially for soccer. Not only does Irvington High have a state-of-the-art weight room for our athletes and trainers to use, but also has an excellent turf pitch right across the road. The addition of the natural grass field located at the Irvington track is also appealing. We aim to make the transition for these athletes as streamlined as possible, which is also why we picked Fremont. The weather, the environment, the goose poop – it’s all very similar to Uzbekistan.”
Of course, nutrition and rest are also very important factors for world-class athletes such as the soccer stars of Uzbekistan. As per the description on the Extended Stay America website, they offer “world-class dining, with professional chefs tailoring each and every bite to the standards of athletes. Whether it’s the Froot Loops, hash browns, or other assorted continental breakfast items, each bite is engineered to power athletes throughout their day.”
When asked about the living accommodations, Uzbekistan captain Eldor Shomurodov mentioned, “I feel really blessed to be able to eat, sleep, and train at Irvington. I’ve heard nothing but good things about Irvington, and know that it is one of the best schools across the country.”
Starting on May 27, Uzbekistan athletes will arrive at Irvington to train and begin their preparation for the World Cup. When asked about this, Irvington principal Forrest Williams proclaimed, “It’s really a great honor to host these athletes. But to be honest, it’s not a huge surprise. Irvington has always been renowned for its great athletics. Whether it’s our stellar football team brimming with Division 1 athletes or our badminton team that does such a good job of losing to Mission San Jose every year, deep down I always knew that the humble institution of Irvington High School would catch the eye of FIFA.” AP Coordinator Mr. Jones also chimed in, professing that he “really loved football growing up. It’s exciting to see Irvington host the best football players in the country. As a matter of fact, I watched football every week. Watching number 81 go over the top of defenders on Sunday night was really something magical. Not sure what Uzbekistan has to do with football, but I guess it’s cool the sport is expanding.”
As teams begin to train, Irvington High School will also be hosting a fan meet-and-greet on May 29th, open to any Irvington students who wish to attend.
