On April 16, 2026, Nintendo launched its third entry in the Tomodachi Life series, “Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream.” The game was developed by Nintendo Entertainment Planning and Development for the Nintendo Switch. It is also available on the Nintendo 3DS, although some users say the process to acquire the game is a bit more lengthy and tedious as it doesn’t receive updates.
Like its predecessors, the game allows players to create Mii characters and then place them on a customizable island where they go about their daily lives. The main appeal of this version, as well as that of the earlier ones, is the unpredictability and absurd humor. Players can recreate their friends, favorite celebrities or fictional characters and watch and relationships form; it’s perfect for playing out that one non-canon ship from that one show you were invested in back when you were 10.
This version offers several more updates allowing it to keep up with modern expectations. One of the most notable changes is relationship inclusivity. Unlike previous versions, this one allows same-sex relationships, choosing the Mii’s sexuality and gender and removing gender restrictions on clothing. Users have responded positively to this change with many loving the representation and feeling seen.
Additionally, the game play has been expanded. Players are now able to have 150 Miis compared to the previous 100. There is also an increase in the customization options as the size, shape and decor of the island is up to the discretion of the player. Miis are also allowed to freely roam the island instead of being confined to certain spaces. There are also a variety of mini games to make it more fun. The games offered change throughout the day depending on the needs of the Mii, but they commonly include “Red Light, Green Light,” “Odd One Out,” “What’s Missing?,” and “Zoom Quiz.”
Audience reactions have been mixed. Many longtime fans enjoy the return of the series and the added inclusivity. They also enjoy newly updated humor and interactions, however they do feel that it can get repetitive when playing for long periods. Similarly, many think that the game isn’t that different from the 2013 version as it only offers minimal updates.
After playing the game on my friend’s computer, I would say that I enjoy the creativity and humor that is present. I also appreciate the added inclusivity as that makes the game more interesting. I would say the best way to play the game is to check on it throughout the day whenever you’re doing something low-effort rather than playing continuously. Finally, the game costing $60 is a bit high for what it has to offer but I recommend trying out the demo to see if you enjoy it. Overall, the upgraded features and creativity of the gameplay are truly wonderful and it deserves a 4 out of 5 stars.
