Mrs. Tebow – I coach track and field at Irvington, and currently, I’m the distance coach. I was always hoping to coach, but I wasn’t anticipating doing track and field as a whole, but definitely cross country. Cross country is something that was always there. Outside of school and prior to Irvington, I’ve coached for soccer, and I used to–still do, actually–belong to a running club, where I help folks with their training plans. So, that’s kind of where I started my coaching journey, and eventually became an Irvington coach. Looking at next year’s season, I think our track and field team has a lot of great potential–some great athletes. For example, this week we’ve got the Bayshore meet, which is just one of the Meet of Champions. We’re sending 2 600m runners to Bayshore, as well as a 4×8 team, and one of our female athletes was just shy of 1600. I’m really hoping to see more athletes make it to Bayshore next season as well and improve on their times. In terms of things I’ve seen from our team, and even individual athletes being really successful are both leadership and performance. Honestly, our team has some great leadership from our captains, and on top of that, our athletes keep showing improvement. Both new athletes and second-season ones have been continuously improving on their PRs and attacking their times. I think my coaching philosophy is pretty simple. When it comes to coaching, I always emphasize that consistency is key, and having a positive attitude, not making any excuses. During all my time coaching at Irvington, I think it’s just been really enjoyable to see all the friendships and bonds develop between all types of athletes. It’s been a pleasure to see them grow and develop, and be kids outside of the classroom. To anyone looking to join track and field, I would tell them that it’s a great experience, even if you’re not an athlete. It can help you achieve a lot of goals, for example, if you want to be healthier, track and field can help you achieve that. If you do want to become more athletic, you can do that as well.
