Usually how the arrangement with the California School of the Blind works is we start out at our own school and take a van over to Irvington around 8 o’clock in the morning. We take 3 classes here and we leave right after fourth period at around 11:50 a.m. On certain block days, we stay for first and third period and eat lunch here, but on others we only stay for second period and head back.
Before we came to Irvington there were two high school programs, one in partnership with John F. Kennedy High School and one with Newark Memorial High School. But now it’s all combined into one program, which makes it easier. The school for the blind also has a middle school program that does something similar, and they go to Walters Middle School. I went to Walters Middle School for seventh and eighth grade, and originally went to Kennedy when the program was still running. After my freshman year, that program shut down and we came here.
At Irvington, I do the Dungeons and Dragons Club during lunch, as that’s the only time that I have available on my schedule. Most activities and clubs happen on the school for the blind campus. We take academic classes here, and extracurricular classes there like PE, art, music, and band. This year in Irvington, I have World History, Personal Finance, and English.
Currently, we haven’t had any problems with accommodations. The teachers are understanding of our needs. As for the impacts of the school’s construction, I’m not sure yet. It’s possible we might be moved to another school, but it’s not confirmed yet.Â
