Kathleen Chen and Rohit Dilip qualify to state-level for Speech and Debate
On March 3rd, 2012, hundreds of speakers gathered at the prestigious and competitive Speech State Qualifier held at James Logan High School. This year, the Irvington Speech and Debate team sent 8 competitors to the event, 7 of which advanced to the tournament’s final round. This is a record for Irvington, as the competitive tournament is diffucult to advance or “break” in.
Kathleen Chen (11) and Rohit Dilip (9) performed extraordinarily, qualifying for the statewide tournament in April. Kathleen qualified for her Oratorical Interpretation event, which is an individual interpretation of a notable speech. Rohit qualified for Imrpomptu, which requires competitors to make a five minute speech after being given two minutes and a list of three topics to choose from to discuss.
Irvington speech captains and officers will be working with Kathleen and Rohit in the weeks leading up to the tournament — we wish them the best of luck at States!
