Dear Esteemed Readers and all Irvington Students/Faculty,
It is with a heavy heart that we write this letter. To start — an apology for the numerous issues regarding the various issues that have arisen as of recent. In our decades-long history, we have always made a commitment to be the student’s figurative and literal voice, reporting on issues important to the community on campus. We are well aware that we have fallen short of meeting the expectations of journalistic integrity and ethics that our readers place on our publication in this instance.
We understand the critical role The Voice takes in shaping conversations on campus and beyond. On numerous occasions, our articles have made waves not only across the school but also caught the attention of Fremont Unified Board Members and high-ranking administration at the District Office. Recent events have tested the trust that we have worked to build with the community. We do not take such changes lightly, nor do we dismiss the obligation we have on campus.
We want to demonstrate that we are taking this matter very seriously. We are currently in consultation with the Student Journalism Legal Center in relation to the aforementioned issues. Due to legal repercussions and the circumstances of the situation at hand, we are not at liberty to discuss specifics of potential litigation at this time.
As the great journalist Walter Lippmann once said, “There can be no higher law in journalism than to tell the truth and to shame the devil.” Today, our publication is reflecting that we have become the devil we swore to shame.
Rest assured, however, we will be making several internal changes to ensure that we continue to report in a way that is responsible, ethical, and principled. With this in mind, we hope to regain your trust and continue engaging Vikings for years to come.
Sincerely,
The Voice
