Zimeng Wang (12): I applied and got accepted into Cornell University through Early Decisions (ED). When I opened up the portal, I was pretty shocked. I was by myself in the car, and there were a lot of emotions, too, because so much work was put into the process.
Whether or not someone should apply ED is definitely a personal preference. I can see why people leave it open and do not ED, so if you’re not sure, I don’t recommend applying ED. But if you’re 100% sure about a college, why not?
Applying for Early Decision was a pretty last-minute decision and since Cornell was one of my top choices, it was a good option for me. Early decision does also give you a little boost, because you’re showing commitment to the school.
The reason why I wanted to go to Cornell was because I think the atmosphere is really good. I wanted a rigorous academic environment, but also a place where I know I can still have fun, meet, and have a supportive community. I’m planning to major in electrical and computer engineering, so I am really excited for the academic aspects and being able to learn new things. Another aspect I’m interested in is the environment at Cornell. I know Ithaca is a pretty rural area, but they also have a lot of nature scenery. I really like being outdoors, so I think that would also be fun for me.
Being committed to a college definitely feels like a relief. It also brings more excitement into my life, because I get something to look forward to and also pushes me to keep working harder and in terms of my academic interest, keep diving deeper in.
My advice for juniors would be to start essays early. I probably started the brainstorming process in March or April of my junior year. Also, during the process, I’d say to take it slowly, one thing at a time. Don’t rush to put everything together because it’s going to make it seem so much more challenging. Don’t go online or try to compare yourself with others because I feel like that just makes it so much more stressful. Everyone is unique and there’s definitely a place for everyone, so I think there’s no reason to die of anxiety. Just focus on yourself and know that you’re unique and special in your own way. Good luck to all my current senior friends and also the next year juniors as well!
