SUHAVI GREWAL (10): I’ve always taken an interest in art. Graphic design wasn’t something I got into at first, it happened naturally. I started by making digital posters for family members and friends whenever they asked, and over time, it became something I genuinely enjoyed doing.
Most of my work includes posters and other online designs, but I like experimenting with different layouts for each and every one of them. One thing that makes my designs unique are my recent attempts of incorporating 3D elements into the design instead of keeping everything flat. Sometimes I layer elements to create a bolder effect, which makes the design pop out
I use graphic design in a couple of ways; some of it is for schoolwork, but most of the time I design personal projects for family members who want help with something specific. I’m that person they always reach out to for stuff like this. I like that this lets me pursue my hobby with flexibility.
When I’m starting a new design, I usually look for inspiration on Pinterest or Instagram. Seeing other people’s work helps me think of new ideas for my own projects. I don’t copy designs, instead I take inspiration from the colors, layouts, and styles.
One design I’m especially proud of was something I made for a family member’s birthday party. Her sister loves Tiana, so I decided to create a design based on her. I drew Tiana myself and added 3D elements to the piece. I used layered materials and small movable pieces to add definition to her curly hair and create other subtle effects. Putting everything together took a lot of time, but the end result was so worth it.
I’m currently in a visual arts club at school. I haven’t submitted my work anywhere officially, and I don’t do commissions outside of helping family members. For me, graphic design is more about expressing my inner creativity rather than earning money.
I don’t see myself pursuing graphic design as a career, but I could definitely see it becoming a side hustle in the future. Graphic design allows me to combine art and creativity in a way that feels personalized.
