“To me, our podcast, She’s Got A Story, started as something that just sounded fun. My friend brought the idea up one day, and I was immediately interested because I had always wanted to learn about different career paths. More than that, I really wanted to give women a platform to talk about their experiences, which also became a huge part of why I wanted to do it in the first place.
The podcast didn’t feel real until we had our big Zoom call together. That was when we started sending emails, delegating work, and actually deciding what questions we would ask and what platforms we would use. Before that, it was just an idea, but once we started reaching out to people, it felt like we were actually building something.
We expected at least some people to listen because the episodes are posted on public platforms, but we didn’t really know how far it would go. It was strange and exciting to think that people we didn’t even know might be hearing our voices.
If I had to describe She’s Got A Story, I’d say it’s about career stories that empower young teenage girls. The goal is to encourage and show them what’s possible. The typical episode process starts with us finding someone to interview, which is honestly the hardest part. A lot of people think our emails are spam, and even when they don’t, they’re usually very busy. Once someone agrees, we research their career and background to make a list of questions. The first part is usually about how they got to where they are, and the second part focuses on advice. We split the questions between ourselves, send them to the interviewee, set a date, and then record.
Communication is the most difficult part of podcasting. We all have busy schedules as juniors, and the people we interview are working in corporate offices, so trying to find a time that works for everyone can be stressful. Early on, I also learned how important it is to follow up quickly. If you don’t respond fast enough, people can lose interest, and you might lose the interview entirely. Despite this, we’ve still made a lot of amazing connections.
In the future, I want She’s Got A Story to explore even more career paths. We’ve done a lot of women in STEM so far, but I really want to expand into the arts as well. I don’t know if I’ll continue the podcast after high school, but it’s something I’d like to keep doing if I have the opportunity, especially since it’s something I do with my friends.
I think She’s Got A Story says a lot about who I am right now. I really believe that women deserve a bigger voice in the world than they have, and I want to be someone who helps broadcast that.”
