“I really like art. I draw a lot, but sculpture is different. I like the idea of me being able to make actual things I can hold and maybe even use in my daily life.
When I start a new piece, I think about what I want to make. When I come into class and greet my friends, we share ideas before starting a new project, but I also often look around the classroom for some new ideas. I like to make unique things, so I try to think about how I can make my piece unusual. Then I draw my idea, but sometimes I just start sculpting it without drawing. Working on a sculpture in class is helpful because my friends and I can ask each other for advice. After I fire it, I finish by glazing it.
Although I want to make unique things, I wouldn’t always say my projects end up unique. I often don’t like the result of my sculpting. Because of that, I always try too hard to perfect my projects, but it takes a lot of time and I sometimes end up behind on schedule. I often have to spend more time outside of class by coming in during lunch or FLEX to finish each piece. I only work on sculpture for my class, but I would like to practice more outside of school. My favorite piece wasn’t unique or a project for Sculpture, but I sculpted the character Usagi from Chiikawa.
It’s okay if students interested in taking Sculpture don’t know how to sculpt. It’s really fun because you can make literally anything and it’s not as hard as it looks.”
