ABIGAIL KANG (9) “From a very young age I’ve been passionate about leadership and knew that I wanted to pursue a higher role in it. However, I was always really scared because I’m not very good at public speaking or putting myself out there, and am a very introverted person.
In eighth grade I applied for ASB, and realized that I loved leadership. This inspired me to face my fears and run for a bigger role: freshman class officer. As class officer this year, I was able to gain a lot of experience and knowledge of how class council and spirit days work. With that experience, I can improve what we’ve been lacking in as a class in general.
In my campaign, I tried to have a theme. My color was yellow, so I tried to have a Curious George theme since it’s very memorable. You can usually associate a theme with the color and the person. So whenever you see any posters around, reels, or videos, they can always bring it back to Abigail Kang.
My main goal is to bring a lot more spirit and engagement to our class as I keep seeing the same faces at events and spirit days. I want to switch that around, catering to various hobbies and interests, so that more people will be open to involving themselves in school spirit.
An idea I had was a feedback form on Instagram. It’s going to be there for the whole year, so that anybody, anonymously, can give us feedback on what we’re doing as class council and what they want to see, so that we have as much student input as possible. Since one of my goals was catering to students’ diverse interests, collaborating with clubs would be a really good way to do that, and definitely bring student spirit up.
I think I’m a very interactive person. I really like meeting new people and making new friends, even though it could be difficult at first. I also perceive myself as an approachable person; very open to any concerns, ideas, and questions.
Darian, the other class officer, was in the same ASB class in eighth grade, so we knew each other already and are pretty close friends. First of all, knowing the person, knowing your partner, is a good way to start your partnership. As a team, we can make those collaborative ideas happen and those visions a reality.
If you’re even thinking about class council, you should definitely apply, because we love to see new passionate members. Going into high school, it’s genuinely one of the best decisions I’ve made.”
