Do Ask and Do Tell

President Obama has finally fulfilled his promise to repeal the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.

Tuesday, September 20th, 2011 the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy implemented in the vanished from the lives of Americans. This repeal has led our nation into a new, more progressive form of living. With the repeal of this policy gay, lesbian, or bisexual individuals can now openly serve in the military. This not only further accepts gays and lesbians into our culture, but also allows them to exercise their rights more freely.

Passed eighteen years ago by former President Clinton, this bill had sparked outrage from people across America. With the repeal of this policy came celebrations. Individuals who had been forced out of the military, air force, and navy have begun to re-enlist.

High schools across the nation have been targets of recruiting centers for years. This new bill has opened up new possibilities for gay and lesbian students across our nation, including those of Irvington.

Health teacher Mrs. Devakumar (formally Ms. Ryan) reflects, “Well think about our own students who maybe GLTB and now it allows them the freedom to be themselves and join the military without having to hide who they are because no one should need to hide who they are”.

As time passes on, Americans become more open-minded about the acceptance of gays, lesbians, and bisexuals. This bill is definitely stepping-stone to a more equal world.
