Democracy reaffirmed: the new Prime Minister of Hungary, Peter Magyar, assumed office May 9, 2026. His election deposed the increasingly authoritarian Viktor Orbán, who served as Prime Minister for 16 years and whose political style was viewed as a role model for American conservatives. Orbán’s removal – and the removal of authoritarians like him – has been a spot of hope for 2026, but it is a hope that will require effort to sustain.
