Released on March 23 of 2026, the new film adaptation of “Crime and Punishment” was released to global audiences in theaters.
Inspired by the classic novel of the same name written by Fyodor Dostoevsky, director Amethyst Funnel puts her own unique twist on the story. Featuring Ryan Reynolds as Raskolnikov and Zendaya as Sonia, the film focuses on the twisted and deep romantic relationships between the main cast. Other cast members include Kevin Hart as Razumihin, Gal Gadot as Dunya, and more star studded Hollywood actors. Critics and others online heavily criticized the choice in casting, with the original story being set in St. Petersberg, Russia in the 1800s. An anonymous Letterboxd reviewer left a review stating: “for all i know the movie could’ve been set in 2016 la with all these iphone faces.”
However, Funnel defends her choice in cast, stating that this line up of actors and actresses, most especially Hart, have the acting chops to portray the complex layers of love highlighted in the film.
“Crime and Punishment” centers around poverty stricken yet prideful Raskolnikov. As a former student who is now unemployed, he murders a pawnbroker but later has a mental breakdown and falls into demise. While the original novel dives heavily into Raskolnikov’s psyche, the film takes a lighthearted approach for audiences to digest and instead shifts the focus onto his romance with the prostitute Sonia. Subplots also include Razumihin’s flirtatious romance with Raskolnikov’s sister Dunya and other love triangles and squares coming between them.
Upon watching the adaptation, I found that what made the movie particularly special was the cinematography. The colorful palette of the film was refreshing to see, a vibrant contrast between this and the book’s setting, which I considered a bit too dreary and drab.
Unfortunately, many online users took to TikTok to express their disapproval for the adaptation. Those who have read the novel and somehow thought that this was a story about morality and the complexity of human nature bashed Funnel and the actors for even choosing to interpret the story this way. Words such as “inaccurate,” “piece of ******,” “waste of money,” and “disrespectful” were just a few tossed around in the heated online discourse.
However, those that simply just watched the film without reading the book found that the movie was amazing! This group of audiences, including me, felt as if the film should have been separated from its source material. “God forbid a girl just wants to experience romance on screen” said a TikTok creator who hit back at a comment criticizing the adaptation and highlighting the disrespect to Dostoevsky.
At the end of the day, “Crime and Punishment” was a five star watch. Source material is simply a recommendation, and is it really that deep if Funnel had decided to take it in a different direction? I would highly recommend all who love romcoms and the romance genre in general to come into theaters and witness this love story for the ages.
